Forum: etree Subject: Best format for iTunes on Mac?

Hi,
I'm new to the forum and getting ready to download my first set of Dead shows. What is the best format to choose for iTunes on my Mac? I don't want to download more data than iTunes will use.
Thanks!!

I'd ditch iTunes, and use Cog
http://cogosx.sourceforge.net/

Download the FLAC's or SHN's.

Also email Apple and tell them you want support for FLAC and SHN in iTunes and in the iPod. I doubt they'll ever do this since they created their own lossless format bit it's worth a shot.

Thanks for the tip but I really do need to use iTunes so that I can sync with the iPod. Any tips for iTunes?
Thanks!

MP3 will allow you to have the maximum amount of music. WAV format will have the best sound, assuming you start with FLAC or SHN. Anything I download strictly for my iPod I use MP3 if I am burning I download FLAC or SHN.

Just download the mp3's to get 'em on the iPod. If mp3's aren't available for a show download the FLACs or SHNs. Use xACT to convert them to AIFF. Then add those to your iTunes library and import them in iTunes to mp3. Then trash the original files to get a bunch of disk space back.

Ogg vorbis is by the best format at the moment for it is far better quality for less space on your hard drive.

Next, Ogg vorbis is by far best for the fact that it imporoves life on the planet being that it is open source unlike mp3, aac, and all the other lesser thans (the people that created these have tunnel vision). Money does not make the world go around.

Ipod does not support ogg yet so I know, so sell it on ebay or something! No matter how cool they get, they are based on archaic formats. (mp3 hasn't been updated since the mid 90's, aac has lots of dirty secrets) Get a player from iaudio http://eng.iaudio.com/ or iriver http://www.iriver.com/ They are cheaper and have more options anyhow. Ipods are just one big advertising dictatorship. You people with ipods are just doing what your told. "like, everybodies doing it. which means it's right?" ..no. It's just "good" advertising.

The downfall of ogg is that you will have to have enough backbone and foresight to break down the pitfalls of your totalitarian programming and finally see what works instead of what just makes money for the few and poverty for the most (you and I). Popular media does not reflect the view of the many. You might think you know that, but how do you act on it? Still watching tv and looking at "the (so-called) news" is no good. Archive.org good! How many tv shows, radio station, or newspaper articles could you just contribute to and it be available to all, not many questions asked? When was the last time you or any of your friends had a show on tv? When was the last time you had billboard space without doing it illegally? This kind of responsible thinking is scaring the #%&$ out of people that don't care about you. Good stuff!

If this makes anyone upset, I suggest you take a look around you, see that you are being screwed everyday of your life, notice that it's not very fun, not working for anyone very efficiently for anyone, and start using ogg vorbis and other formats from people that actually care about you. Macintosh does not care about you much more than taking your money. Soon they will understand that serving humanity and common sense will profit them more in the long run. It's just that you and I just happen to be living in the dark ages at the moment. Irrational, harmful decisions are a mainstay of young, immature "civilizations" like ours. Seems harsh but, if you don't start to adopt it soon, you will be selfishly/ignorantly destroying yourself and me. I don't want to die, yet. How about you?

here is the ogg vorbis main website
http://vorbis.com
If you have any more questions go to the http://www.vorbis.com/faq/

for a good player go to:
WHAMB - http://www.whamb.com/
COG (plays * Ogg Vorbis * Mp3 * Flac * Musepack * Monkeys Audio * Shorter * Wavpack * AAC * Wave/AIFF )
or http://cogosx.sourceforge.net/

ITUNES to play oggs on your ITUNES get quicktime 6.5.2 reinstaller here http://www.download.com/QuickTime-6-5-2-Reinstaller/3000-2200_4-10391519.html
and ogg quicktime components here http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=41359

when you start using ogg more, mac will adopt it into itunes without the components/reinstallers, since open source is the present and the future and the backbone of all that is in your life. Macintosh has alot invested in aac, but all we have to do is know that facts, and only use ogg and other formats/programs that we can all use without racketeering involved (wage slavery). Very soon, all other formats will be just a faded past nightmare, while we then will be focusing on bigger and better realities.
